Executive Summary
LNG industry has witnessed major evolution since 1970s. After a surge of newbuilding in the second half of the 1970s, by the end of 1979, the global fleet consisted of 52 ships – 17 Moss, 16 Gaz Transport, 12 Technigaz, and 7 others. There were limited numbers of trade routes, with ships working on long-term charter to deliver LNG from the exporting to importing countries. The LNG shipping market has developed over the last decade, driven by growth in global liquefaction capacity and demand in the Pacific Basin. The industry is expected to increase imports significantly in the coming years.

The UK has turned out to be LNG importer as it is no longer
self-sufficient in natural gas from the North Sea. The USA which was once an
importer of LNG has become an exporter again after their development of large
shale gas deposits. In recent years, there has also been re-export of LNG from
the USA and Belgium, and this has been developing into a spot market which is
gradually commanding increasing share of world LNG trade. Among the exporting
countries, the biggest development was Qatar gas’s decision to greatly expand
its LNG exports, seeing opportunities to sell in Europe and the USA.
The global LNG market has led to a worldwide fleet of LNG carriers that
transport LNG to regasification plants around the world. New trend of new-build
ordering was witnessed in late 2012 and 2013.
